Presentation of Mamoudzou

Mamoudzou  is the capital city  and  the most populated commune of Mayotte. It is located on Grande-Terre (or Maoré), the main island of Mayotte. There are 71,437 inhabitants on 4,230 ha.

Mamoudzou developed from the 1860s to support the main town of Dzaoudzi, located just opposite on the island of Petite-Terre. Urbanization has gradually integrated old villages, some of which date back several centuries: Kaweni (14th century), Mtsapéré (late 18th century), Choa or "pointe Mahabou", a village founded in the 1830s by the Sakalaves who accompanied Andriantsoly (the last sultan of Mayotte).  In the second half of the 19th century, Kaweni and Kavani hosted two sugar plantations with factories, some of the remains of which are still visible.
The commune is composed of six villages in addition to Mamoudzou: Kawéni, Mtsapéré, Passamainti, Vahibé, Tsoundzou I and Tsoundzou II.

Mamoudzou was still a humble town when it became the de facto capital of Mayotte in 1987 with the installation of the territorial council and prefecture buildings, even though de jure the capital remained at that date fixed at Dzaoudzi. Indeed, Decree No. 77-129 of February 11, 1977 fixed the capital of Mayotte at Mamoudzou, but Dzaoudzi "provisionally" kept this function while waiting for the transfer to be formalized by ministerial decree. Despite the transfer of the administrative buildings ten years later in 1987, the ministerial decree had never been issued, so Dzaoudzi is still the de jure capital until August 26, 2023. On August 27, 2023 (the day after the publication of the decree formalizing its status), Mamoudzou officially became the capital of Mayotte, replacing Dzaoudzi.
