Koungou is a commune of Mayotte (32,156 inhabitants, 2,841 ha) located in the northeast of the island, bordering the capital Mamoudzou. It is the second most populated commune of Mayotte. It is composed (from north to south) of six villages: Longoni, Kangani, Trévani, Koungou, Majicavo Koropa (formerly Majicavo II) and Majicavo Lamir (formerly Majicavo I). Longoni is home to the only commercial port of Mayotte, which gives it a key role in the economic activity of the island. Trévani includes in particular a vast hotel and seaside complex. Majicavo Lamir is now home to the largest shopping center in Mayotte.

Koungou is one of the ancient localities of Mayotte. Its population dates back to the Middle Ages. The current town of Koungou is the most recent site. The first inhabitants settled on the coast, at a place called Mtsanga ylang-ylang. The archaeological site was damaged by the rising waters of the ocean today. From the 17th to the end of the 18th century, to escape the slave trade, the inhabitants left the coast and settled inland on the heights of the place called Mjini Koungou. The remains of this locality still exist today. At the beginning of the 19th century, the inhabitants resettled on the coast at a place called Badar Salama until the colonial exploitation of the Koungou plain nicknamed Lambic.

Flag of Koungou

The flag is white with the coat of arms and the in arch above the words "VILLE DE KOUNGOU". All the models spotted have drawn as if they were intended to be hung vertically, but picture of the city hall show that the are hoisted horizontally, with the arms and the inscription rotated 90°: photo (2018), photo from this page (2018), photo (2022).

The coat of arms was modified in 2024 with now the words VILLE DE KOUNGOU in bigger font added to the listel instead of COMMUNE DE KOUNGOU A logo was adopted at the same time. No flag spotted yet with these new emblems: picture (2024).
