The commune of Dembéni (15,848 inhabitants, 3,838 ha) is in the centre of the eastern coast of Grande-Terre. The commune is made up of five villages: Dembéni, Tsararano, Iloni, Hajangoua, Ongojou. The University Centre for Training and Research of Mayotte, the only higher education institution on the island, is located in the commune. The old sugar factory of Hajangoua is located in the commune.
Dembéni is the main archaeological site in Mayotte. Excavations have shown that the site was an important trading centre from the 8th to the 11th century. According to research carried out in 2013, it was due to the rock crystal trade. The crystal arrived from the mines of Madagascar and was cut and resold in Dembeni to Arab and Persian merchants. This rock crystal was then worked in Egypt and Persia.

The flag is white with the logo, based on the coat of arms and with
the motto "university town".
On the coat of arms is a sugar cane sheaf.
In the logo, the fruits of the original coat of arms have been
replaced by a university hat and a cogwheel: photo (2024), photo (2024), photo (2024).
