The Band

La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians

Established in 1875
Location: Northern San Diego County, along the southern slopes of the beautiful Mount Palomar, in the semi-wilderness, on the banks of San Luis Rey River.
Area: 8,541 acres
Population: @ 620 of which @ 390 live on the reservation
Their self-name is Payomkawichum.
Tribal Chairman: Tracy Nelson (2005)

La Jolla Band's reservation suffered a devastation during last fall's California wildfires. About 94 % of the reservation was burned out to the ground. Other tribes have offered help (especially Pala, Rincon, Sycuan and Soboba) placing evacuated residents in the hotels and promising assistance with the reconstruction. The Tribe didn't have a casino, only a slot arcade with ~30 machines located in their campground and water park complex, but there are plans to build a nice casino and hotel soon, so the prospects for the La Jolla Band are not looking too bad despite the calamity of the Poomacha fire of last year.

The Flag

Apparently, the flag has changed, but I couldn't find any information on the circumstances of it. I'm happy to report La Jolla Band is recovering from the destruction brought on them by the 2008 fires with the help of other Indian Nations, especially Pala and Soboba. Also, Ms.Larriann Musick is now the Chairwoman of the Tribe.
The photo of the new flag can be seen at: www.efc9.org
