The SFV was founded on 16 March 1985 by Hervé Pinoteau, Lucien Philippe (†) and Pierre Charrié. The SFV succeeded the "Association française d'études internationales de vexillologie" (AFEIV, French Association for International Studies in Vexillology), active from 1966 to 1975. The flag of the SFV, designed by Hervé Pinoteau, was adopted on 15 June 1985. The respective proportions of the fields are 9:1:1:5:1:1:9.
