Overview

The municipality of Aguasay (11,771 inhabitants in 2011; 2,581 sq. km) is located in the south-west of the State of Monagas.
Aguasay was established on 23 August 1769 by Friar Juan de la Mata. Coming from Caicara, the friar founded the village of Nuestra Señora del Carmen de Aguasay on the plain limited by rivers Carí and Guanipa., an area originally settled by the Chaima. On 13 October 1783, Luis de Chávez y Mendoza delimited the municipal territory of Aguasay (10,653 ha); at the time, the village counted 225 inhabitants, 50 huts, 120 horses, 2 donkeys and 130 bovines. The municipality of Aguasay was established in 1994, separating from Maturín.

The Flag

The flag of Aguasay, designed by José Iraides Bastardo (d. 2008), was adopted on 28 March 2004. The flag is horizontally divided celestial blue-white-green, with a brown triangle, fimbriated yellow, placed along the hoist. The white stripe is charged with an open book, while the triangle is charged with a moriche, a curagua and an oil derrick.
The blue stripe represents the sky. The white stripe is a symbol of constancy, purity and ideals; the book is a symbol of knowledge, tenacity and study. The green stripe represents the local vegetation. The brown triangle represents the soil. The yellow fimbriation represents a light ray heading to the book, symbolizing God's blessing. The moriche palm ("Mauritia flexuosa" L. f.) and the curagua ("Ananas lucidus" Miller) provide fibre used by the local craftsmen to make "chinchorros" (aka Indian hammocks). The derrick represents oil extraction in the municipality.
