Description of the flag

There are two primary variants of the flag: one with text that is centered on the Y-axis and another that isn't. Across versions of the flag, the font and hill size can also differ. The flag was adopted officially through Decree Nº 822 on 12 December 1990, of which the design came from a contest. The designer is unknown. The flag features three horizontal bands of red, white, and blue reminiscent of the flag of the Orientals led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja during the fight for independence. In the center slightly to the left, a green triangle with two white lines through it is seen, a representation of the Cerro Arequita hill. Behind it, the Sun of May can be seen shining and is a national symbol. To the right, LAVALLEJA is read in black.

Coat of arms

The original coat of arms was approved by the administration on 22 April 1927, being designed by Alberto Miranda Zabaleta. The current version was adopted on 4 August 2010 through Decree Nº 2882 in Article 2, when the Intendency changed its name from Municipal Intendency to Departamental Intendency, likely due to some confusion as the Departments themselves have municipalities; it was only a name change, no extra powers were received. The coat of arms is a shield divided horizontally into three bands of blue, white, and red as the colors on the flag of the Orientals led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja. At the top, DEPARTAMENTO is read in white; in the same color, DE LAVALLEJA is read at the bottom. It has one inner section, through which the Sun of May shines over the Cerro Arequita hill with grass in front. The lower-left depicts a small square depicting two piles of wheat and a plow for agriculture; the lower-right depicts a small square with a cow for ranching, both squares over grass with a blue field.
