The title of the article is the motto of Nantucket's Wharf Rat Club. This club started as an informal daily morning meeting by the fishermen to go over recent events, and became a formal club in the 1920s. Over time, the membership has grown to some 176 male and female members, a part of them summer guests to the island while others are resident. The club has now members of all kinds of walks of life, but those present still continue to discuss recent events, from wharf-wide to
world-wide, every morning but Sundays. The motto still holds: There are no reserved seats for the mighty.
The club hoists a flag each morning over their club house, and other copies have been hoisted the world over, among other occasions even on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. It's a blue triangular flag with in white a rat near the hoist and a five-pointed star in the fly. The rat, which holds a cane and smokes a pipe, was drawn by Tony Sarg in 1926, at the request of Austin Strong, one of the club's founders; it's registered as U.S. patent no. 886.913. The article includes a photograph that shows the flag.
