Description of the flag

The town of Gilbert announced the winner of it's flag contest on July 1, 2023, which was first announced on April 18.

The winning flag is known as "Star of Bright Promise" and was designed by Hamish Lawson. It won the contest against the "Guyandotte Banner", the other finalist in the polls.

The Name "Star of Bright Promise" is special to Gilbert. In the German origin of the name, Gilbert means "Bright Promise" and is a perfect representation of our town.

The central Eight Point Star represents the 8 areas that make up the greater Gilbert area (Ben Creek, Gilbert Creek, Horespen, Isaban & War Eagle, Justice, Sprattsville, Tamcliffe & Slabtown, Verner). The star is inspired by the designs used in quilting across Appalachia for generations.

The Lavender Confluence represents the merging of Gilbert Creek and the Guyandotte River at the heart of downtown Gilbert. It also represents the crossroads that connect Gilbert to the rest of Southern West Virginia. Finally, the two lines coming together to form one united line represents the progress Gilbert has made and the Promise of a clear and bright future ahead.

The three deep purple spaces represent the mountains that surround our town. In these mountains are the riches and opportunities that helped Gilbert to thrive, coal, timer, and ATV Tourism respectively.

The colors of the "Star of Bright Promise" represent the following. The deep Purple of the flag represents our civic pride in our community as well as ambition for a better tomorrow. the lavender represents the serenity, grace, and calmness of our small town. The gold represents the generosity and compassion our people have for one another. The white represents the pure simplicity of small town living.

Seal

The seal shows a purple and gold ring, inside is a purple bar with the town name inscribed on it. above the purple bar is an ATV rider above the outlines of mountains. Under the bar is a purple river with a lion's head next to it. This is meant to represent the school mascot of the Gilbert elementary/middle school, the Lions. Also in the same white space is the establishment date and state initials.
