On June 16th, Ms. Karen Edgin, a graphic designer at the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, replied to my request for information regarding the Nashville International Airport flag. This is the information she provided in her email reply:
This flag has the current MNAA logo, which debuted in 2007. Prior to that, the flag had a white field and our former logo (1987-2006).Paul Bassinson, 6 July 2014
In our flag, the medium blue logo is set on a white field. These colors symbolize the sky. The three white "swoops" in the center of the design refer to a number of graphic ideas:
1. The idea of forward motion and contrails. Contrails were a significant part of the older versions of our logo from the 1970s and later in the 1980s. The redesign in the 2000s kept this traditional element.
2. Piano keys. If you look closely, you will see the shape of piano keys at an angle. This signifies that we're in Nashville - The Music City.
3. The number 3. There are three "swoops" in our logo. The number 3 resonates with Tennessee, since it is often (locally) divided into 3 major economic regions: East, Middle, and West Tennessee. The Tennessee State flag has 3 stars in a circle, also communicating this idea.
