Description of the flag

The flag of the Town of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, is navy blue with four anchors - one in each corner. In the center it has a hourglass and 1677 from the sides. Ribbon inscribed "EAST" above and ribbon inscribed "GREENWICH" below. All elements in metallic (gold?). It can be seen on a photo sent to me by Bruce C. MacGunnigle, Main Street Coordinator, Town of East Greenwich.

About the town:
"East Greenwich is a town in and the county seat of Kent County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 12,948 at the 2000 census. It is the wealthiest municipality in Rhode Island and was named for Greenwich, England. Until 1854, East Greenwich was one of the five state capitals for Rhode Island. The General Assembly, when meeting in East Greenwich, used the local courthouse, which is today the town hall. On 12 June 1775, the Rhode Island General Assembly, meeting at East Greenwich, passed a resolution, which created the first formal, governmentally authorized navy in the Western Hemisphere. A number of other towns also claim to be the birthplace of the American Navy, but none are as early, and none involve specific government authorization." - from Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Greenwich,_Rhode_Island.
(That explains the anchors).

The anchors reflect the facts that the town is a seaport (Greenwich Cove empties into Greenwich Bay, which empties into Narragansett Bay, which empties into the Atlantic; a second reason it that the state of Rhode Island's symbol is an anchor, and the third is the town's connection with the founding of the first American Navy.

The hourglass which is in the center of the flag represents our connection with Greenwich, England. Think of Greenwich Mean Time, and that explains the hourglass, which represents time.

Incidentally, local attorney David W. Dumas designed the East Greenwich Flag, I believe it was done as part of the 300th anniversary of the founding of the town in 1677.

The flag of the East Greenwich Police Department features the coat of arms from the city seal, with the anchors and hourglass, in blue and yellow on a blue field. Above the shield in yellow letters are the words "EAST GREENWICH" while the word "POLICE" appears in yellow letters below the shield.
