LINCOLN HEIGHTS - Lincoln Heights is alternately 15-year-old Orlando Crawford's hometown and a place where he does not always feel safe. Walking around the block in Marianna Terrace, Orlando could just as easily bump into a drug dealer as cross paths with a mother happily pushing a stroller.
These dueling impressions inspired the teen this summer when he sat down with a magic marker and drew the award-winning design for Lincoln Heights' new flag. His drawing, a pair of clasped hands, one brown, one cream, symbolizes the teamwork this mostly African-American community wants and needs as it celebrates its 50th birthday and plans its future. Council adopted Orlando's design Monday as the village's official flag.
"They said do something about my community ... and every day something bad happens," Orlando said. "if nobody does nothing, if nobody works together, it'll stay just like that." Driving drug dealers out of Lincoln Heights and wooing new businesses has been an ongoing chore for village officials who resurrected the community from fiscal emergency in 1993. Plans to build a $6 million health center next year point to a brighter economic forecast for this community of 4,800.
"Orlando's design was chosen because it signified unity," Lincoln Heights Councilwoman Joanne Anderson said. "Some people saw the hands as a symbol of a community holding on, some thought they meant prayer, but in all cases we came back to the idea of unity." Orlando's original design will hang on a wall inside his home, and the cloth flag that will flap in front of village hall is being made. Meanwhile, Orlando, and eighth-grader at Princeton Junior High School appreciated the $100 prize he received for winning the village's flag-design contest. He bought a pair of Nike gym shoes and two school outfits with his winnings.
