The first flag of Sparks was approved by the city council on May 14, 1962.
The creator of the flag was Patricia Fleming, at the time a seventh grader at
Dilworth Junior High. Her design was then modified by Robert Challender, art
student at the University of Nevada. Robert changed the colors from maroon and
white to maroon and gold, which are colors used by Sparks High School. This was
done as part of a contest held by the Sparks Active 20-30 Club. The design in
the center of the flag was also adopted as the city's seal some time afterwards.
In the central design are sketches of a skier representing recreation, a
laborer representing industry, and a train representing transportation. A ring
surrounds these, within the upper part reading "SPARKS" and in the lower part
"NEVADA". Along the bottom of the flag it reads, "CITY WITH PROMISE".
