The Village of Pittsboro (212 inhabitants in 2000; 260 ha), located in northern Mississippi, is the seat of Calhoun County. Pittsboro is the birth and death place of Dennis Herron Murphree (1886-1949), Governor of Mississippi (Democrat) for 10 months in 1927-1928 and three weeks in 1943-1944.
Joel McNeece reports in the "Calhoun Country Journal" that the Pittsboro Board of Aldermen have adopted a flag for the village:
"The flag is red and blue with a large outline of the State of Mississippi in the center and two magnolias in the bottom corners. "Pittsboro" is written prominently across the top. Inside the outline of the state, Pittsboro's status as the county seat is noted with a picture of the courthouse and a slogan that reads "The Heart of Calhoun County" and notes the town's founding in 1852. The flag was designed by alderman Keith Thacker and Alderwoman Cindy Hubbard."
