Description of the flag

According to the city website, Little Canada MN is a suburb of the Twin Cities, of French Canadian heritage. The flag is white, a centered crimson maple leaf, overlain by a white fleur de lys, and the letters LC scripted on that. Below in a curve is CITY OF LITTLE CANADA.

I've always been curious as to the adoption of the maple leaf symbol to represent "Canada" in one way or another outside Canada, especially if it was before 1965. I do know that the maple leaf was a recognized symbol of Canada before then, even if it wasn't (as prominently) on our flag, which is what lead to it's adoption on the Maple Leaf flag, but I wonder if it was recognized as such outside Canada. If Little Canada's flag was adopted before 1965, I would find that of significant vexillological interest.

Though the style of the Little Canada maple leaf is a little different than on the Canadian flag, I think it's too similar for it to predate 1965. Unless of course they modified the style of the maple leaf after 1965. We can't exclude that possibility since French-Canadians in particular have been using maple leaves since at least 1832 on various symbols.
