Designed by Gosling Czubak Landscape Architect Klaus Heinert, the flag was revealed at the Township's 150th anniversary celebration in December and officially unfurled in February at the Michigan Township Association annual conference 'Parade of Flags'.
The flag's color scheme reflects the area's nature, particularly the rivers, lakes, and sandy beaches. Also noted is the township's tie to its surrounding area by its unofficial motto, "Gateway to Leelanau." winning design for Elmwood's new township flag.
