The flag of the Town of Charlestown, Maryland, is brown (chocolate) with white application of the town seal on it. The history behind the colors has to do with the 3rd Maryland Regiment which was commanded by Lt. Col. Nathaniel Ramsey. He and this regiment led a defense of Philadelphia in 1777. Then during the Battle of Monmouth in June of 1778, this local Charlestown regiment, sustaining significant losses, stopped the British advance long enough to allow General Washington to rally his troops.
