Description of the flag

From www.ltadd.org/breckinridge/
The flag of Breckinridge County has a map of the county. The color green was chosen to represent the agriculture, the color gold represents the people, and the color white represents the environment of the county.
Dov Gutterman, 4 January 2003

The county is named after John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky, who was Vice-President of the United States under James Buchanan, 15th President. He then ran for President himself along with James Bell on the Constitutional Union ticket, which was an attempt to apply the principles of the 1648 Peace of Westphalia (namely cujus regio, ejus ereligio) to settle the slavery dispute in the US and thus to preserve the Union. The Breckinridge-Bell ticket was a dismal failure, and when the Confederate States seceded Breckinridge joined the South. He eventually became a Major-General in the Confederate Army, even though Kentucky declared itself neutral territory; almost equal numbers of Kentuckians served on both sides during the conflict. Breckinridge's military record was not particularly distinguished - I know nothing of his postwar history. A full account of his life can be found in the Dictionary of American Biography (DAB).
