Orestes Town Flag
Designed by Carolyn Shettle & accepted by the Town Board in 1976
The symbolism of the Orestes flag is as follows:
The rings:
1. A ring stands for continuity; there is no
beginning and no ending. It stands for the past, present and future of Orestes.
2. One ring symbolizes our Delaware Indian heritage. One ring is for the gas
boom that created the town, and one ring is for the more-than 300-year old
Orestes oak tree.
3. The rings are O’s, standing for Orestes. The flame,
of course, symbolizes the discovery of gas, and also suggests the torch of
liberty.
The colors are red, white and blue for freedom, but a brighter blue,
for independence. Unintentionally, but clearly visible in blue, outlined by the
flames, is a descending dove, symbol of peace and Christianity.
