The Mascoutah Flag design includes a circle at the center which represents prairie grasses, grains, crops and all growing plants. The lion within the circle is the symbol of Scotland, England, Switzerland and Germany and is a reminder of the town's ancestors. The new world is symbolized by the deer, native to the area.
The lion and deer symbols face the shield containing the letter M, a 19th century German letter design. The M represents the name Mascoutah, which was derived from the Mascoutan Indians. The symbols are placed on a background of a white cross representing the many churches in the town. Completing the field are rectangles of purple. The colors of purple and white have become associated with the city. The flag was designed by Don Harris in the advanced art class at Mascoutah High School, under the direction of Elizabeth Schnur, in 1992.
The center circle of the flag is presently used as the city logo on stationary etc. and a small flag patch is used by the Mascoutah Police Explorers.
