When Mississippi's Ordinance of Secession was signed on 9 January 1861, it was marked by a ceremony in which the 'Bonnie Blue Flag' was raised over the capitol building in Jackson. Among those who witnessed the event was an Irish comedian named Harry Macarthy, who shortly after wrote and performed the famous song, 'The Bonnie Blue Flag'.

The flags of European powers represented countries that only had (usually the largest) part of their territory in the present territory of the United States. But the "Lone Star flag" of the "State of Florida" represented American territory only, and as such was no different from the fifteen star flag of its neighbour.
Since the two merged, does that make the Bonnie Blue flag and the 15 star S&S national flags of the former countries? Former flags of the USA? Or should the fact that the younger country was annexed by force be taken into account, making the Bonnie Blue flag a flag of a country wiped out by the US?
