On February 27, 1985, the winner of the competition for design of the city flag was announced. It was local resident Vernon Hall. The flag contains a dark blue triangle beginning in the upper and lower corners of the left side of the
flag. The sides of the triangle within the flag are bordered in white. Within the triangle are three sailboats, with black hulls and a white mainsail and jib. There is a band that runs from the point of the triangle within the flag to the right center of the flag. Within this band is a word "OCEANSIDE", in black. Above the white stripe, before the sides of the triangle within the flag and running to the top and right side of the flag, is a rectangular figure. The left leg of the figure is in a 45 degrees angle pointed upwards. Within this rectangle are the words "CITY OF" in white. Below the white stripe is another rectangular figure, before the sides of the triangle and running to the right side of the flag. The extreme left leg of the figure is in a 45 degrees angle pointed downwards. Within this blue area are the words
"INCORPORATED 1888" in white. A white border surrounds the service mark."
