Coalinga, California, got its name because it was along a railroad route and it was designated as "Coaling Station A" which was reduced to "Coaling A" and finally when the town was established, Coalinga.

The centennial flag employs the city flag, but behind the seal is a black and white depiction of railroad, an oil pump, and motto and dates.
