The Woodland City Flag was adopted in 1997 after a design committee reviewed submissions from area residents and students from local elementary schools. The heritage oak tree located in the center of the flag is the historical symbol of
the "City of Trees." The shade of green reflects the gardens and agricultural base of the community. The shade of red represents the red bricks prominent in the town's early construction. Red is also a color common to the flags of
California, the United States, Spain and Mexico. The star indicates the city's status as the county seat of Yolo County and 1861 acknowledges the year the city became known as Woodland.

The Woodland police department has its own flag. I have only seen the police flag in a community information center in the shopping mall, it is a medium blue with a heavy metallic police star badge on it with gold fringe. It is interesting to me that the fire department flies the city flag along with the U.S. and California flags at their stations, but the police department only flies the U.S. and California flags at police headquarters.
