The flag was adopted in 1992, and was designed by local historian historian Dennis Lambert as commissioned by the city.
The flag consists of nine portions. In the upper and lower portions are "The Six Flags of Alabama," which consists of the five countries and the state of Alabama that ruled over the land which consists of Alabama. These are Spain (whom is represented by the flag of Castile and León; Great Britain, France, United States, Alabama, and the Confederate States. The middle three parts have text and the seal of the city. The hoist text reads the city's name with "The Scenic City," the city's motto. The fly text has the state name with it's motto underneath. The central field shows the city's seal, containing the USS Bridgeport. on a white field.above and below are two blue semicircles, showing the founding year, and the incorporation date.
