Field & Boat Flag, The Surgeon General, 1931: Under various names, the Army Medical Department (AMD) has been in continuous existence since 1818. The Chief of the AMD is titled the Surgeon General (of the Army, not of the US).
The AMD branch color was (and is) maroon. General officers of the staff assigned to the AMD were authorized field and boat flags with the field in maroon and the branch insignia and rank stars in white. For a major general, rank was indicated by two white stars flanking the insignia; for a brigadier general one star was placed over the insignia.
