eBay was founded as AuctionWeb, in California, on September 3, 1995. The
company officially changed the name of its service from AuctionWeb to eBay in
September 1997. Originally, the site belonged to Echo Bay Technology Group, a
consulting firm. An attempt to register the name echobay.com was made, but that
name was already taken by the Echo Bay Mines, a gold mining company, so the name
was shortened to go with the second registry choice of eBay.com.
