From the site of Ukrainian Heraldry:
"The modern coat of arms was approved in July 22 1997. In a vert field there is a azure falcon with open wings, under it there is Mercury's staff, on the sides there are the azure rhombus with an edge turned to the end of a crozier; under it there is a or Cossack cross. The authors are: A. V. Shmrai, M. M. Omelchenko, V. M. Abramov, S. S. Cherneta.The azure rhombuses symbolizes the salt-works. A cross represents the Cossacks, who protect the salt-workers and base the settlement which later became the town. The Mercury's staff represents the trade specifity of town and its belonging to Slobozhanshchina (Kharkivshchina). A vert colour (the colour of the nature) emphasizes the function of town as the resort. The falcon symbolizes a song "Dyvlus' ya na nebo", the author of this song - Michaylo Mykolayovich Petrenko - is the native of the town."

The City

From the site of Ukrainian Heraldry:
"City in Doneck Oblast. It was founded in 1646. The first name was Tor. Since 1685 it was a squadron town of the Iziumsky regiment. On the 22nd of January 1784 it was renamed into Sloviansk."
