Dar es Salaam (from the Arabic meaning "the house of peace") is the former capital and largest city in Tanzania. It is also the largest city in terms of population in East Africa. It is located on the Swahili coast on the Indian Ocean. It was the capital of Tanzania until 1974, after which the government bureaucracy began moving to Dodoma in the centre of the country.
The flag of Dar es Salaam is green with the municipal Coat of Arms in the centre.
