The Supreme Electoral Council (website) originates in Law No. 5,545 on the election of MPS, which was adopted on 15 February
1950; the Law prescribed the establishment of Electoral Boards in
provinces and districts, and of a Supreme Electoral Council in Ankara.
These provisions were transferred to Law No. 298 on basic provisions of
elections and voter registers, adopted on 26 April 1061.
The Supreme Electoral Council is also prescribed in the 1961 and 1982
Constitutions (Articles 75 and 79, respectively).
YSK provides general management and judicial supervision in the presidential, parliamentary, provincial and municipal elections, and in the submission of the laws on constitutional amendments to the public vote. YSK is the last authority to appeal against any objection to the election results. Its decisions are final and cannot be appealed to any jurisdiction.
On 6 may 2019, YSK cancelled the election of Ekrem İmamoğlu (CHP) as the Mayor of İstanbul, after an "extraordinary request" tabled by the defeated party AKP. The quite obscure motivations of the ruling strongly suggested it had been obtained by pressure exerted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan; as a result, İmamoğlu increased by more than 5% his cast of the votes in the second election, whose result was not appealed by AKP.
