Following the establishment of the Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, the former Mardin central district (86,984 inhabitants in 2012) was renamed to Artuklu in 2014.
Artuklu is named for the Artuqid dynasty, of Turkmen origin, whose princes ruled Hasankeyf and Diyarbakır (1098-1231), Harput (1185-1234), Mardin (1107-1409), and Aleppo (1117-1234).

The flag of the Artuklu district government (photo) is white with the government's emblem. "T.C." stands for "Türkiye Cumhuriyeti", "Republic of Turkey"; "Kaymakamlığı" means "District government".
The emblem features the Grand Mosque of Mardin.

The Grand Mosque is the oldest mosque in Mardin. An inscription at the minaret's base, dated 1176, credits the building of the mosque to Kutbüddin İlgazi of Diyarbakır; the exact date of building is, however, unknown. Another inscription in the courtyard, dated 1186, mentions the Artuqid ruler Hüsameddin Yavlak Arslan (1184-1201).wBR> In 1400, the mosque was damaged during Timur's invasion and the minaret was suppressed, to be subsequently restored during the Ak Koyunlu and Mamluk period. Revamped during the Ottoman period, the mosque was fully restored in 2010.
Located in the heart of the bazaar, the mosque is designed according to the Ak Koyunlu scheme, as a courtyard surrounded by buildings erected at different periods, therefore of composite architectural style. The mosque is composed of three naves parallel to the mihrab; traditional Ak Koyunlu fountains are placed in the north of the courtyard, which is acceded by two gates from the east and west.
