Levice flag

Levice flag submitted through Rob Raeside, 22 July 1999

At the part of beautiful country of South Slovakia, where the waters of down Hron and Ipel majestically flow between low banks, where the last spurs of mountains connect to fertile flatlands, spreads the region of Levice, The first writen notice about Levice comes from the year 1156, about the castle from the year 1318. The rich history has got also a border-town Sahy, which was formerly the seat of "zupa" of Hont. The first writen notice about it dates in 1237. Until the territorial reorganisation in 1960 the town of Sahy has been the seat of the region. The same status has had the town of Zeliezovce. In 1960 all the three regions were connected to one, but Zeliezovce still has been an important economical and cultural centre of the South part of region. Formerly it was the seat of the family Esterhazy. An original part of history of region of Levice have always been the traditional markets. The first notices about them we can find in 14th century, from 17th century the markets have been organized regularly. The market of Levice has been held in the season of vintage, in October. As from the historical view the special place belongs to the town Pukanec. Until the end of 19th century Pukanec was a free royal-mine town. The Levice region is rich in culture monuments witnessing to the hundreds of years old history of this area.
