The flag and arms of Kobarid are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Kobarid, adopted on 15 July 1999, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 68/99.
The symbols were designed by Valt Jurečič of Heraldika d.o.o. and Heraldica Slovenica, who kindly provided drawings from which the images shown on this page were made.
The flag is in agreement with the modern Slovenian practice,
bicolour with a simple geometric division. It is in proportions 2:5, blue with a white
stripe that isolates near the hoist a field containing the attribute
from the coat of arms, the edelweiss flower.
The hoist blue field together with the white stripe forms a
square, the edelweiss being in the center of it. The flower should
be maximum 8/10 of hoist size and minimum 2/3 of it.

The coat of arms of Kobarid is "In a blue field a white Alpine mountain peak
between two edelweiss flowers in chief and in wavy cut green base
swimming a fish". The coat of arms is bordered with golden outline.
The blue field is for the clear skies, and the Alpine peak might
be the Krn top (2244 m), but it might be only a
general representation not connected to any particular peak. The
edelweiss flowers with golden seed and green laps are not only
symbols of the Alpine flora but a more general symbol of Alpine world. The
green wavy base in no doubt to represent the river Soča, better
known after its Italian name Isonzo, the place of many battles in
First World War. This swift clear river is nowadays a resort for
sport fishing.
Valt explains that he had prepared a coat of arms with a silver nightingale, reminding a poem by Simonu Gregorcicu called Goriški Slavček (The Highlands' Nightingale) over the red waves of the river Soča/Isonzo. Due to fragmentation and political disagreement among the three parties in the Municipal Assembly, the proposal was dropped and a complicated emblem was even officially adopted, with request to Valt to make a coat of arms of it. Doing what was possible, Valt ended with the current coat of arms, with mountains and edelweis. He considers this design as heraldically unacceptable.
