Volvo

AB Volvo / Volvo Groups is a Swedish company dealing with motor engine manufacture founded in 1927. Since 1998, when its famous automobile division Volvo Personvagnar was sold to Ford, Volvo has specialized in commercial vehicles, having purchased Renault Camions and Mack Trucks. However, the trademark and thus the flag, is still used by Ford's Volvo Cars company.

According to its website Volvo operates in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The company flag(s) is likely to be found in any of these countries, according to local custom and law.

The Volvo trademark flag is dark blue ~2:3 flag with commissioned lettering "Volvo" in white designer slab serif bold capitals, as used in car dealerships and other company facilities. I've seen this in use in Sweden (in 1998) and also many times in Portugal; I suppose this is customary use. The reverse is usually illegible.

Logo

The Volvo logo, consisting of the Mars symbol charged with the company name on a horizontal bar, doesn't seem to show on flags. It appears to be now (after the 1998 Ford purchase) exclusive of Volvo Personvagnar.

As far as I know, this logo is still put on every truck manufactured by Volvo.

Also, it might be worth noting, that the main reason for the choise of this symbol was as a Mars symbol, but that it is also a symbol for the element iron, and Volvo was originally a subsidiary of SKF (see Wikipedia: SKF).

Variants

Volvo image by António Martins-Tuválkin, 18 June 2007

At <http://www.flags2000.com/flag.htm?cref=D8> a US flag dealer offers a 1:2 version with the lettering proportionally larger. Other US flag dealers, at <http://www.embassyflag.com/commercialflag2.htm> and at <http://www.worldclassflags.com/prod-volvo-dealer-flag.htm>, offer the negative design: white flag with dark blue letters. Attached (with 2:3 ratio)

(The latter, at <http://www.embassyflag.com/flag/automessageflags.jpg>, offers "bunting" flags with brand names on red - double wide - blue flags, US-style; here <http://www.maine-flag.com/flag-store/automotive.shtml> also vertically in three equal parts.)

Other vertical flags, with the regular white on blue design, have the lettering pushed to the top, like these in Belgium; Reminiscent of Swiss knatterflaggen.

At blujay.com this is mentioned as a new dealership style.

Divisions

The other divisions of the company deal with finance and with manufacture of trucks, buses, construction equipment, aircraft engines and boat engines. The latter company is Volvo Penta, which uses a flag of its own, unsurprisingly like the main trademark flag with the word "Penta" added under it, as can be seen, e.g., in Denmark or in Poland

Volvo brand flags following the same specs can be "deduced" at least for Volvo Aero (aircraft engines).

A specimen of the Volvo Aero flag can be found at: . I've tried to find an actual logo like this, for the fly edge, but the occasional glimpses I can find are actually blue on white.

Volvo Event Flags

Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2006

There's also the "event flag" of Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2006 held in 12-21 July 2006. The flag is also dark blue with white lettering "Volvo Youth Sailing" in three lines at the hoist, "ISAF World Championship" smaller under it, all in regular white serif capitals; on the fly two stylized ship sails outlined in white with a red blotch.

Volvo Ocean Race

The logo of Volvo Ocean Race (formerly the Whitbread Round the World Race) includes a flagoid: dark blue pennant with white seahorse (?) See <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Ocean_Race>.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 18 June 2007

The 2001-2002 flag had somewhat different imagery, but the same flagoid appeared. I think it's a crown and seahorse, the burgee of the Royal Ocean Racing Club.
