"Svenska Aeroplan AB" (Swedish for "Swedish Aeroplane Limited"; AB=aktiebolag) (SAAB) was founded in 1937 in Trollhättan, with the merger of SAAB and Linköping based ASJA. The headquarters moved to Linköping. The style "Saab" replaced "SAAB" around 1950.

Note that the presented flag is of Saab Automobile AB, not of the current Saab Aerospace. See Wikipedia on Saab Automobile.

The post-2000 company logo consists of the Scanian arms recolored to show red griffin head with golden crown, all but the crown fimbriated in silver, above the commissioned lettering "SAAB", all within two concentric silver rings. The flag images were made using this online image, recolored and resized.

SAAB used to be a part of SAAB-Scania AB, a company merged in the late 1960s. The griffin in the logo is thus accually the sign for the company Scania AB, but was also kept by the two SAAB companies (SAAB Automobile AB which makes cars and SAAB AB which makes airplanes and military equipment) when SAAB-Scania was split up in the 1990s. (Scania AB makes lorries and busses. Its name and symbol is originally derived from the provincial arms of Scania.)
