الهيئة العامة للطيران المدني (English: General Authority of Civil Aviation,
GACA) is responsible for regulation of air transport services and the
implementation of civil air regulations, air safety and airworthiness standards
in the country. It traces its roots to 1948, when the authority responsible for
civil aviation in the Kingdom was established under the name "مصلحة الطيران
المدني" (English: Civil Aviation Authority) to include both "الخطوط السعودية"
(English: Saudi Arabian Airlines) and the "إدارة الطيران المدني" (English: Civil
Aviation Administration). Saudi Airlines was separated and the earlier entity
became known as "مديرية الطيران المدني" (English: Directorate of Civil
Aviation). In 1977 the name was changed to "رئاسة الطيران المدني" (Presidency of
Civil Aviation). And pursuant to " جب قرار مجلس الوزراء رقم" (English: Cabinet
Resolution No. (13) issued on 17/1/1425 AH (2004 AD) (enacted in 2006), the
Presidency of Civil Aviation was transformed into a public authority with legal
personality and financial and administrative independence to operate according
to commercial foundations and standards, and to become its new designation
"الهيئة العامة للطيران المدني (English: General Authority of Civil Aviation,
when the institution controlling aviation was split into a civil department and
the Royal Saudi Air Force. Then, by "صدر الأمر
الملكي رقم" (English: Royal Decree) No. A/230 of 12/09/1432 AH
(2011 AD) it was split from the Ministry of Defense and through "صدر الأمر
الملكي رقم" (English: Royal Decree) No. A/133 of 30/7/1437 AH
(2016 AD) it was attached to the Ministry of Transport.
