"Государственная корпорация по атомной энергии, Росатом (English: State
Atomic Energy Corporation, Rosatom is a state corporation in Russia, established
in 2007, the regulatory body of the Russian nuclear complex. It is headquartered
in Moscow. Rosatom runs all nuclear assets of the Russian Federation, both
civilian and military, totaling over 360 business and research units (http://www.rosatom.ru/about/factories/
and
http://www.rosatom.ru/en/all-enterprises), including all Russian nuclear
icebreaker ships.
It traces its history to the Ministry for Atomic Energy
of the Russian Federation and Federal Agency on Atomic Energy (or Rosatom),
which were a Russian federal executive body in 1992-2008 (as Federal Ministry in
1992-2004 and as Federal Agency in 2004-2008).
The Министерство по
атомной энергии Российской Федерации, МинАтом (English: Ministry for Atomic
Energy of the Russian Federation, MinAtom ), was established on January 29, 1992
as a successor of the Министерство среднего машиностроения СССР - Минсредмаш
СССР, МСМ СССР (English: Ministry of Nuclear Engineering and Industry of the
USSR, MNEI USSR).
On March 9, 2004, it was reorganized as the Federal
Agency on Atomic Energy.
According to the law adopted by the Russian
parliament on November 2007, and signed by the President Putin on December 1,
the agency was transformed to a Russian state corporation (non-profit
organisation), the Rosatom Nuclear Energy State Corporation.
