Boavista Futebol Clube is a club from the Boavista neighborhood in the
city of Oporto, the portuguese second city. It existed as a neighborhood
club, playing in regional championships or in the 3rd nacional division until
late 70s, when a new and ambitious leadership took over. Soon, the club was
in the 1st division, later 1st League, and in the 90s it began fighting for
the 4th place and for the Cup, becoming thus a regular in european
competitions. Last year, the club won the League for the first time,
becoming the 5th club to win the top portuguese football competition, after
Benfica, Porto,
Sporting and Belenenses
(one title, a long time ago).
Boavista, by the way, is a toponym that is relativaly frequent in
Portugal; it’s a contraction of "Boa Vista", that
translates as "Good [=Fair] View".

The flag is reminiscent of the finish flag
in racing: a 2:3 chequered flag, with 4×6 black and white squares and a
white 2×2 canton charged with the club’s emblem, a quite heraldical
crowned shield, also chequered in black and white, with a black chef containing
the letters "BFC". As usual, a number of variations are
used by the fans, but this is the flag that appears in press-conferences and
the like, so I believe it’s the official one.
