It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of yellow and blue.

Shield Argent with bordure Gules, an embattled wall topped by an embattled tower, both Or masoned Sable with port and windows Sable; on its flanks two rabbits forcene Or; in chief a Maltese cross Gules, flanked by two laurel branches Vert; in base a wavy line Azure, between seven peaks Vert, set in two fesses, above four peaks and beneath three peaks. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "VILA COVA À COELHEIRA".
Meaning:
In the Medieval the town had been seat of an important commandery of the Order of Malta. The rabbits (Port.: coelhos) are canting elements. The wavy line (neither bar, fess nor barrulet) is representing Alva River.

Vila Cova à Coelheira Commune is one of the five communes of Vila Nova de Paiva Municipality; it had 1109 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 32.2 km².
