It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain yellow field (village rank).

The arms are Gules a castle Argent masoned Sable with port and windows Sable, in chief a water mill wheel Or and a wind mill wheel Or, in base a fess wavy Argent charged with a bar wavy Vert. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "AREOSA - VIANA DO CASTELO".
Meaning:
"Areosa" means "sandy place", absent from the arms, which symbolize the local importance of wind power, local military architecture, and sea-side location.

Areosa Commune is one of the 27 communes of Viana do Castelo Municipality (q.v.); it had 4853 inhabitants in 2001 and covers 11.2 km².
