It is a quite typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a gyronny background (city rank) of green and yellow.

The arms are Argent an orange tree fruited Or and leafed Vert and trunked and eradicated sable between two crossbows upright Gules. Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CIDADE DE TONDELA". This is the flag in use since after the upgrading of the municipality seat to city status, in 1986.08.23.

Before the upgrading of the municipality seat to city status, in 1986.08.23, the flag was quartered (town rank) of yellow and green, the mural crown had only four towers (town rank) and the scroll read simply "VILA DE TONDELA". This flag and arms was adopted and published in the official journal
Diário do Governo : I Série in 1933.08.23.

Tondela municipality had 31 026 inhabitants in 2001, and it is divided in 19 communes, covering 371,2 km². It is part of: Viseu District, traditional province Beira Alta, 1999 ref. adm. region Beira Litoral, C.C.R. / NUTS II Centro, and NUTS III Dão-Lafões.
