It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a quartered of black and red field.

Shield Argent, a castle sable with port and windows Gules, in chief a cross fleury Vert. Mural crown with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black initials: "ALCANEDE".
Meaning:
The silver base colour is symbolizing the communes wealth. The castle is representing that one of Alcanede, the black colour is representing the colour of the soil. The cross is alluding to the Order of Avis, the former ruler. Draft designed by Affonso de Dornellas on 28 December 1927.
