It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of purple and white.

Shield Argent, two grapevines fruited Purpure and leaved Vert set in fess, in chief a dragon Gules, in base a fountain Sable spitting water Azure. Mural crown with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black initials: "ALCANHÕES".
Meaning:
The dragon according to a legend was defeated by St. Martha, the local patron saint. The grapevines are stressing the importance of agriculture, especially the growing of fine local vines. The fountain is representing ancient thermae and the local riches of water.
