It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field gyronny of yellow and blue.

Shield Azure, five coronets Proper ordered in quincunx, in base two rice ears Or crossed per saltire. Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "CANIÇO - SANTA CRUZ".
