It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field.

Shield Purple; ordered per fess a watermill's wheel Or at dexter and a sailing ship Sable, rigged Argent, at sinister; in chief a Crown of the Holy Spirit Argent; in base two tea branches Or, blossomed Argent and in base crossed per saltire. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "MAIA - RIBEIRA GRANDE".
Meaning:
The crown is referring to the Holy Spirit, being the local patron saint. The millwheel is referring to the numerous local watermills, being an important business line in the past. The ship is referring to maritime activities, especially fishery. The branches are referring to local tea production.
