It is an almost typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quarterly divided of green and white, usually meaning town rank.
The flag is slightly atypical because the green is used in the background and yet it is absent from the coat of arms, a situation which is not unusual but unexpected for a flag adopted in such a late date.

The arms are Azure three factory chimneys Argent masoned sable ordered 2:1 and flaming Gules garnished Or from their furnaces and in chief seven 8-point stars Or set in fess. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "FREGUESIA DO BONFIM".
Meaning:
The toponym comes from "bom fim", meaning "good end", a notion absent from the chosen arms.

Bonfim Commune is one of the seven communes of Porto (Oporto) Municipality (q.v.); it had 24 265 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 3.1 km².
