Proença-a-Nova municipality had 9610 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of four communes covering 395,26 km². It is part of Castelo Branco District, traditional province Beira Baixa, 1999 ref. adm. region Beira Interior, C.C.R. / NUTS II Centro, and NUTS III Pinhal Interior Sul.
""Proença" is Old Portuguese for "Provence" (later become "Provença"), but this is not reflected in the arms; "a Nova" means "the newe"" (the older, Proença-a-Velha, is a village located in nearby Idanha-a-Nova municpality).
