It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a green
and white gyronny field (city rank).

The arms are barry wavy of Argent and Vert, over all three dolphins Sable emphasized Or ordered 2:1. Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CIDADE DE MATOSINHOS".

Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário da República : III Série on 22 March 1986. These arms and flag were adopted upon the upgrade of the municipality seat to city status in 28 June 1984 and are a trivial change of the former arms and flag.

Plain (monocoloured) Portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have variations without arms: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

The pre 1984.06.28 arms and flag were adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : II Série in 1966.11.07, a remakably late date. These included the usual town attributes, four visible crown towers
and plain green flag.

Matosinhos municipality had 167 026 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 10 communes covering 62,30 km². It is part of Porto District, traditional province Douro Litoral, 1999 ref. adm. region Entre Douro e Minho, C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte, and NUTS III Grande Porto.
