It is a slightly untypical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on yellow and red quartered background (usually meaning town rank).

The arms are Azure in base a triple mount Argent charged with a branch of chestnut Proper, above two eagles Or combatant, in central chief a 5-point star Argent. Mural crown argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "SANTA MARIA DE MARVÃO".
Meaning:
Mountains, eagles and chestnut probably refer to nature and landscape, the star is an attribute of St. Mary. Santa Maria is located in the walled city and the "capital" of Marvão Municipality.
