About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain yellow background (village rank) .

Coat of arms

The arms are Azure a fountain Or efervescent Argent, in chief an eagle volant Sable garnished and lined Or. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "LUSO".
Meaning:
Luso was established in 1837, when it was divested from Vacariça commune. It is an old style spa tourism center, simbolized by the fountain, and was upgraded to town status on 6 November 1937; one of the few pre-1972 towns which is/was not a municipality seat, former or current.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 27 Mar 2010

Flag and arms designed by Affonso Dornelas, mentor of modern Portuguese Heraldry, and approved by Comissão de Heráldica da Associação dos Arqueólogos Portugueses (CHAAP) on 25 June 1923, but apparently only officially adopted much later, when published in the official journal Diário da República: III Série on 26 November 2001.

Former flag (1923-1937)

According to Sérgio Horta the 1923 text anachronically prescribes four visible towers, but there's an image for a putative correct flag for 1923-1937 with a three-tower mural crown. Here is a subject worth enquiry.
